The body’s self-healing properties are as old as life itself. All living systems contain within them their own innate repair mechanisms. Naturopathic doctors refer to this as the Vis Medicatrix Naturae (“The healing power of Nature.”) Disease, disability and aging all result when the the Vis Medicatrix Naturae (the “Vis”) is overwhelmed or exhausted.
Generative Medicine is an exciting new naturopathic specialty that aims to identify the body’s self-healing processes and allows the physician to participate in partnership with them. This is achieved by applying the tools of data science to the complex behaviors seen in both health and disease. Generative Medicine uses the methods of network science to understand the complex relationships between an individual, their genetics, the environment, and the molecular basis of sickness to determine the optimum point for support and intervention for each patient. Most conventional medicine is still performed under the earlier so-called “linear” model, i.e, this goes to that. If a patient has X number of symptoms, they have Y disease, and require treatment Z. The generative physician instead views this scenario as a web of relationships, the final result being the thoughts and actions of the Vis Medicatrix Naturae, and generates a plan in concert with its ultimate goals.
Practicing Generative Medicine is difficult. It is information-intense, requiring specialized computer tools and a comprehensive knowledge of genetics, pathology and biochemistry. Physicians who practice Generative Medicine are among the elite of natural medicine, weaving complex data and observations into protocols that must encompass the treatment of the patient’s body, mind and spirit.
The Center of Excellence in Generative Medicine (COE) is the culmination of Dr. D’Adamo’s life-long dream: The fusion of time-honored traditional healing methods with twenty-first century information technology. A collaborative effort between expert physicians, seasoned in the principles of personalized medicine, working together in alliance with their patients, all contained in an integrated academic environment.
This approach allows for safer and more individualized treatments and a unique understanding of the complex behaviors seen in both health and disease. No two patients at the COE are treated in similar manner. Diet, supplementation, exercise recommendations and lifestyle adjustment are all tailored to each patient, using Dr. D’Adamo’s research on blood types, epigenetics and computer science.
Dr. D’Adamo describes the process of developing the COE, ‘From our first discussions about the possibility of a Center of Excellence in Generative Medicine, almost three years ago, our goal was to investigate the use of new technologies, algorithms and philosophies as applied to a new type of patient care; one that is personalized and crafted according to generative principles. I am especially proud that this initiative has found a partner in the University of Bridgeport, a recognized educational world leader in the field of integrative medical education.’
